Who is CP Radhakrishnan?

CP Radhakrishnan, born in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, has spent more than forty years in public life. Starting off as a volunteer in the RSS, he rose through the ranks of the BJP, winning back-to-back Lok Sabha elections from Coimbatore in 1998 and 1999. Over the years, he became Tamil Nadu BJP President, led a legendary 19,000 km state-wide ‘Ratha Yatra,’ and spoke for India at the United Nations.

His administrative experience covers roles as Governor of Jharkhand, Puducherry and most recently Maharashtra. Radhakrishnan is known for living close to ordinary people, working for social causes and bringing changes at the local level.

How Did the Election Unfold?

The Vice Presidential election took place in New Delhi on September 9, 2025, with a record turnout of 98.3% MPs casting votes. Radhakrishnan, representing the NDA, defeated Opposition INDIA bloc’s candidate Justice B Sudershan Reddy by 152 votes, receiving a solid 452 first preference votes compared to Reddy’s 300. The election was peaceful but competitive, with many MPs voting independently in what turned out to be a clear win for the ruling alliance.

Modi’s tweet is not just a congratulatory note—it signals confidence in Radhakrishnan’s ability to bring sensible debate and fairness to Parliament. Modi highlighted Radhakrishnan’s passion for improving the lives of the poor and marginalised, signalling that the new Vice President will put ordinary citizens first. This is seen as a message of hope for social reforms and transparent governance in India’s future.
