Kunwar Nagpal who has tested everything from Alto to BMW and Lamborghini has shared his hands-on experience after driving the Mahindra Thar Rox for over 11,000 km. He has broken down his experience into five main points – why he bought it, how it performs, its positives and negatives, mileage, and service cost.
What Makes AX5L Stand Out
The Thar Rox AX5L sits between the MX5 and AX7L variants. While it shares most design features with the MX5, it adds key upgrades like a better infotainment system, 65W fast-charging socket, automatic transmission option, ADAS, and Intelli-turn for tight turns.
The AX7L, which has a panoramic sunroof, 360° camera, ventilated seats, and premium sound system, wasn’t available at the time, so AX5L felt like the most value-for-money choice.
Not All Smooth – What Needs Fixing
After driving the car extensively, the reviewer didn’t shy away from pointing out negatives.
High-Speed Stability: The car loses traction on bad roads during high-speed braking, which can be risky.
Rear Seat Comfort: The third person in the second row finds the seat belt hooks uncomfortable.
Music System: Poor sound quality, especially at the rear.
Missing Features: Despite push start and smart key, keyless entry switch is missing. Also, interior color choices have been reduced by the company.
Power, Mileage & Maintenance
The best part? Performance. The Thar Rox comes with a 2.2L diesel engine delivering 172 BHP and 370 Nm torque. The reviewer says it gives a solid punch and feels smooth even in idle condition. The ADAS works perfectly on highways – tested between Jaipur and Delhi.
On mileage, he did a full tank test from Noida to Rajasthan and got around 12 km/l on highway. In city conditions, it gives 9–10 km/l, depending on driving style.
When it comes to servicing, the second free service at 10,000 km cost him around ₹11,356. He added that the bill could have been slightly reduced by removing optional items like engine coating or extra lubricants. Still, a ₹9,000+ service bill for a “free” service was surprising.
Mahindra Thar Rox– Worth It or Not?
the Thar Rox has over-satisfied him. It’s smooth to drive, never faced technical bugs, and grabs serious attention wherever it goes. Whether on city roads or village tracks, people stop and ask – “Is this the new Thar Rox with sunroof?”
If you’re looking for a real 4×4 SUV with solid power, good looks, and a fair list of features, the Thar Rox AX5L might just be the perfect match – as long as you’re ready to accept a few rough spots along the ride.
